GM FOOD

Worldwide, about 672 million acres of land are under cultivation, of which 25 percent or 167.2 million acres < @ 25% total world crop land, in USA 68% soybeans, 26% of corn, and 69% of cotton are GM > – an area greater than twice the size of the United Kingdom – consisted of GM crops in 2003. Since 1996, the United States has consistently planted more GM crops than any other country, with 105.7 million acres supporting GM crops in 2003. <this value has increased as farmers have added more GM planted cropland > Genetically Modified Crops in the United States (Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology)

GM foods are any type of plant or animal that is modified by addition of DNA to their genome designed to affect some process like growth or resistance to disease, etc. What is important is that our technique of adding DNA is extremely primitive and unlike any normal process of gradual mutational change or genetic selection of better food crops. Instead, genetically modified plants and animals are  treated with either a shot gun type DNA addition process or other biologically sloppy techniques that modify and alter not just by addition of a new gene but also modify many normal gene functions as well as expressing a particular modified DNA from some bacterial species. The unfortunate choice is usually a bacterial gene that normally never becomes genetically integrated ( joined chemically into the DNA of an animal) into the genomes of higher plants or animals.  The multiple changes caused by this process almost never lead to as nutritious a food as the original plant . GM crops are plants that have take up a piece of DNa that has the capability to protect the GM plant from a potent herbicide called Round Up. This allows then to grow when other plants are killed off.

FUTILE CYCES - in some ways GM food is like the 'FUTILE CYCLES'  we encounter when abuse of antibiotics leads to bacterial resistance and now we are nearly back to a dangerous pre-antibiotic world. A similar process is taking place with GM crops, about 3 years after planting GM crops, the weeds have acquired resistance to the herbicide RoundUp and now must be treated with other weed killers.This was the original supposed strength of GM crops, they could survive a scorched earth herbicide on other plants and be the only survivor. This challenge-response of other biological entities was predictable by any good biologist. In a curious way, GM plants are over the long term a SELF CURED PROBLEM. The real dangers are the damage done before the cure is complete. GM foods are also not designed with regard to the continuing sustainability of human food production, They have a automatic "only one season growth" intentionally FOR PROFIT but ALSO FOR CONTROL OVER CUSTOMERS.  However, GM food has no benefit like  antibiotics once did:

1. GM food does not have higher yield per acre of crops then normal crops in the well studied case of soybeans,

2. GM food crops have seeds that cannot germinate (cannot re-grow more of same). Since before recorded history, farmers have saved some of the seed to grow next years crop, now they cannot with GM food.

Europe and most of the developing world continue to resist Monsanto's seed imperialism. The industry and its allies decry this stand as a senseless response to fear-mongering. 3. GM food alters downward the protective phytochemicals in plants that are so valuable in protecting our health .

In the DIET section, we described our principle protection as coming from plants. Not with GM foods.

The process of creating a GM plant requires scientists first to isolate and grow plant cells in the laboratory using a tissue culture process. The problem is when it's done it can create hundreds or thousands of DNA mutations throughout the genome. Changing a single base pair may be harmful. However, widespread genome changes compound the potential problem many fold... Promoters are used in GM crops as switches to turn on the foreign gene. When done, the process may accidentally switch on other natural plant genes permanently. The result may be to overproduce an allergen, toxin, carcinogen, anti-nutrient, enzymes that stimulate or inhibit hormone production, RNA that silences genes, or changes that affect fetal development. They may also produce regulators that block other genes and/or switch on a dormant virus that may cause great harm. In addition, evidence suggests the promoter may create genetic instability and mutations that can result in the breakup and recombination of the gene sequence. Plants naturally produce thousands of chemicals to enhance health and protect against disease. However, changing plant protein may alter these chemicals, increase plant toxins and/or reduce its phytonutrients. For example, GM soybeans produce less cancer-fighting isoflavones. FDA documents made public from a lawsuit revealed that virtually all the agency scientists asked to comment voiced strong warnings that GMO's may cause serious health problems. But the FDA was under orders from the White House to fast track GM foods, and the person in charge of FDA policy was the former attorney of biotech giant Monsanto--and later become their vice president. 4. GM food uses dangerous toxic poisons (Roundup) and requires higher levels of fertilizer  

We have evaluated the toxicity of four glyphosate (G)-based herbicides in Roundup formulations, from 10(5) times dilutions, on three different human cell types. This dilution level is far below agricultural recommendations and corresponds to low levels of residues in food or feed. All R < Roundup weed poison required for GMO planting >  formulations cause total cell death within 24 hours, through an inhibition of the mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase activity, and necrosis, by release of cytosolic adenylate kinase measuring membrane damage. 5. GM food degrades the soil by killing off and diminishing needed live organisms that live in the soil. For every horse in a pasture, biomass in the soil is about 8 times the weight of the horse as biomass of bacteria, arthropods, worms,fungi, and other life. GM crops are best described as a killing treatment of soil.

In 3 years, Bt-cotton < GM cotton > has reduced the population of Actinomycetes by 17%. Actinomycetes are vital for breaking down cellulose and creating humus... Bacteria were reduced by 14%. The total microbial biomass was reduced by 8.9%... Vital soil beneficial enzymes which make nutrients available to plants have also been drastically reduced. Acid Phosphatase which contributes to uptake of phosphates was reduced by 26.6%. 6. GM crops are not about feeding the poor. Additional to control over needed food, they are about supplying the developed world with soybean feed stock for their animals. This leads to impoverishment of the third world farmers (and suicides) without improving food stocks in those countries.

Most of the genetically modified crops in developing countries are soy, says Bill Freese, science policy analyst at the Center for Food Safety and co-author of “"Who Benefits from GM Crops",” a report issued at the same time as ISAAA's release. These crops are exported to rich countries, primarily as animal feed. They do absolutely nothing to supply food to the hungry. As used in developing countries, biotech crops are shifting power away from small, poor farmers desperately trying to eke out livelihoods and maintain their land tenure. 

7. After about 3 years, the few weeds surviving Roundup poison pick up the resistance genes in the GM plants and become unaffected by Roundup poison (another set of "FUTILE CYCLES" occasioned by absence of understanding typical challenge-response of biological systems) - to a biologist this is an obvious challenge-response event, if your sample is large enough you will get successful gene acquisition by weeds. Such glaring stupidity is the same as the over use of antibiotics that generates resistant bacteria - again stupid FUTILE CYCLES. This is how GM plants are over the long range SELF CURING PROBLEMS.

8. GM crops contaminate and hybridize with normal crops, even "organic" crops - leading to lawsuits by Monsanto against farmers who are unable to stop pollen from blowing onto their fields. Consumers are blind-sided with GOVERNMENT COMPLICITY by the US government "preventing the clear labeling of GM" content. You really don't easily know that you are eating GM foods - by regulatory design. More accurately by intentional REGULATORY TAKEOVER of government agencies charged with protecting the public's health. This problem is not just Monsanto's, but also Bayer who admitted in court that they could not control the escape of recombinant plant genes despite " best practices" precautions.

 

A wide range of organic or health food products on sale in the UK contain traces of genetically modified (GM) ingredients, according to a study due to be published in April, reports CORDIS.... Professor Mark Partridge and Professor Denis Murphy, from the biotechnology unit at the University of Glamorgan in Wales tested 25 products containing soya using an EU approved method for detecting traces of GM ingredients... They found that 10 of the 25 samples tested positive for traces of GM ingredients, even though eight of the positive samples had been labeled 'GM free' or 'organic'. Four of the products that showed traces of GM were above the UK Soil Association's limit for organic food, including one vegetarian sausage mix which contained 0.7 per cent GM soy.  GM ingredients detected in organic 'GM free' foods  10-Feb-2004  

9. The Bacillus subtilis (bacterial) gene that is used to gain this resistance to Roundup poison leads to the death of  newly weaned piglets fed GM corn in a few weeks compared to normal non-GM corn feeding that leads to heath. Adult animals would avoid this if given a choice. Even those adults that can survive will get a wide range of allergic immunological reactions to this food. These allergic immunological actions were known to the scientists who opposed granting GM foods a "safe status" but overruled by political appointees.

10. GM crops lead to a severe constriction of the diversity of food crops which is always dangerous should some food crop source fail as they did in the Irish Potato Famine (1740-1741) . In that case it was a disease called potato blight, but right now we have a major mutant form of wheat rust fungus that is devastating wheat crops in Africa and Eurasia . These pest problems are likely to be always with us, but decreasing the diversity of our food supply is insane. Diversity allows some crops to survive and feed us. Narrow monoculture is the fastest route biologists know of toward nightmare famines.

Natural breeding processes have been safely utilized for the past several thousand years. In contrast, "GE crop technology abrogates natural reproductive processes, selection occurs at the single cell level, the procedure is highly mutagenic < damages DNA> and routinely breeches genera barriers, and the technique has only been used commercially for 10 years... Seed diversity is dropping, as Monsanto and its allies aim to eliminate seed saving, and development of new crop varieties is slowing. Contamination from neighboring fields using genetically modified seeds can destroy farmers' ability to maintain biotech-free crops. 11. Given a choice, animals avoid eating GM foods (so will people when they taste the difference !).

When given a choice, animals avoid GM foods. This was learned by observing a flock of geese that annually visit an Illinois pond and feed on soybeans from an adjacent farm. 12. GM foods have long range health problems associated with consumption.

 

In May < 2009 >, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine concluded that animal studies have demonstrated a causal relationship between GM foods and infertility, accelerated aging, dysfunctional insulin regulation, changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system, and immune problems such as asthma, allergies, and inflammation... Campaigners against genetically modified crops in Britain last are calling for trials of GM potatoes this spring to be halted after releasing more evidence of links with cancers in laboratory rats. UK Greenpeace activists said the findings, obtained from Russian trials after an eight-year court battle with the biotech industry, vindicated research by Dr Arpad Pusztai, whose work was criticized by the Royal Society and the Netherlands State Institute for Quality Control.  Suppressed report shows cancer linked to GM potatoes  By Colin Brown, Deputy Political Editor  Saturday, 17 February 2007

13. GM foods were pushed through the regulatory process to declare them the same as normal crops against the recommendations of the scientific committee set up to evaluate safety. The FDA commissioner overruled the scientists. There are virtually no long term animal health tests of these GM foods.

 

When the FDA was constructing their GMO policy in 1991-2, their scientists were clear that gene-spliced foods were significantly different and could lead to "different risks" than conventional foods. But official policy declared the opposite, claiming that the FDA knew nothing of significant differences, and declared GMOs substantially equivalent... This fiction became the rationale for allowing GM foods on the market without any required safety studies whatsoever! The determination of whether GM foods were safe to eat was placed entirely in the hands of the companies that made them -- companies like Monsanto, which told us that the PCBs, DDT, and Agent Orange were safe. < current author's emphasis >

The entire process by which GMO seeds have been approved in the United States, beginning with the proclamation by then President George H. W. Bush in 1992, on request of Monsanto, that no special Government tests of safety for GMO seeds would be conducted because they were deemed by the President to be “"substantially equivalent” to non-GMO seeds", has been riddled with special interest corruption. Former attorneys for Monsanto were appointed responsible in EPA and FDA for rules governing GMO seeds as but one example and no Government tests of GMO seed safety to date have been carried out. All tests are provided to the US Government on GMO safety or performance by the companies themselves such as Monsanto. A long-term feeding study commissioned by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, managed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth, and carried out by Veterinary University Vienna, confirms genetically modified (GM) corn seriously affects reproductive health in mice. Non-GMO advocates, who have warned about this infertility link along with other health risks, now seek an immediate ban of all GM foods and GM crops to protect the health of humankind and the fertility of women around the world... Feeding mice with genetically modified corn developed by the US-based Monsanto Corporation led to lower fertility and body weight, according to the study conducted by the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. Lead author of the study Professor Zentek said, there was a direct link between the decrease in fertility and the GM diet, and that mice fed with non-GE corn reproduced more efficiently. This last comment relates to our earlier discussion of epigenetic and possibly genetic alterations that can affect offspring and may be near permanent - we simply don't know yet. This truly is "frankenfood". It appears that the backers of this nightmare are so desperate to gain money that they will tolerate any cost to the health of humans or possibly our own survival. Would it not be ironic if we made for profit things that killed us all off?

14. Since clear labeling as a GM Food Product is forbidden by government edict, you won't know when you are eating GM modified food. Try reading the previous paragraph and this one again.

 

Genetically engineered foods saturate our diet today. In the US alone, over 80% of all processed foods contain them. Others include grains like rice, corn and wheat; legumes like soybeans and soy products; vegetable oils, soft drinks; salad dressings; vegetables and fruits; dairy products including eggs; meat, chicken, pork and other animal products; and even infant formula plus a vast array of hidden additives and ingredients in processed foods (like in tomato sauce, ice cream, margarine and peanut butter). Consumers don't know what they're eating because labeling is prohibited, yet the danger is clear. Independently conducted studies show the more of these foods we eat, the greater the potential harm to our health. Based upon the U.S. current regulatory scheme, the plants and their products may enter our food supply without any required safety testing. The potential risks of this type of GM plant are discussed in the context of human health, and it is argued that there should be very careful safety testing of plants designed to produce biologically active molecules before they are commercially grown and consumed. 15. GM Foods may be used for nefarious purposes that are often not admitted. One such purpose is to sterilize male reproduction by interfering with sperm production.

 

A small California biotech company, Epicyte, in 2001 announced the development of genetically engineered corn which contained a spermicide which made the semen of men who ate it sterile. At the time Epicyte had a joint venture agreement to spread its technology with DuPont and Syngenta, two of the sponsors of the Svalbard Doomsday Seed Vault. Epicyte was since acquired by a North Carolina biotech company. Astonishing to learn was that Epicyte had developed its spermicidal GMO corn with research funds from the US Department of Agriculture, the same USDA which, despite worldwide opposition, continued to finance the development of Terminator technology, now held by Monsanto.  GM Files: GM Corn to Make Men Sterile Already a Reality    

 

        So Why? Why is there such a rush supported by the military and powers that be to push this clearly dangerous technology? Aside from the big money payoff, why is this a heavily pushed political option? Most intelligent people don't want to eat this "FrankenFood" ! The power of corporate control is seen in that they have national prohibition of labeling and lobby and pass state laws to prevent people from "even knowing" if they are buying "Frankenfood". GM food should be labeled "Frankenfood", but I settle for honest disclosure of GMO Food. The whole original purpose of the US FDA was to protect against bad food. Under Obama, a Monsanto executive now runs the FDA. Another former Monsanto executive is the new Food Czar in Obama's administration. Talk about "REGULATORY CAPTURE" of our public protection agencies by the rapacious corporate control of Monsanto.

The real reason for GM food is about raw power to control. Each planting season you have to get new seeds from Monsanto. Most farmers, even in the US would prefer to save some of the seeds from the last crop to plant for the next. GM foods are designed to prevent germination of the seed into a living growing plant. This short term profit and very great COERCIVE POWER, is what is desired here. Monsanto is furiously buying up all non-GM seed companies to ensure monopoly by destroying the traditional alternative. Would you place the trust of your child's life and your own to Monsanto and the other GM companies? What about the political/survival leverage this gives to political decisions about who may be permitted to buy seeds this year? Literally who may survive!

This is happening in spite of the risk because of what F. William Engdahl revealed in his powerfully important, well documented book titled "Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation." This is not just about profit!  It is COERCION OF A DECLINING EMPIRE POWER that tries to coerce others into subservience while at the same time draining them of resources. As we shall come to understand later, this has been the central policy direction of the US power juggernaut for a long time. This is very different from the history of our country, where we produced something so valuable that the world wanted to buy it.

Sanity may well overcome bribery and INNOVATIVE IGNORANCE or more accurately here COERCIVE POWER. Most of Europe is now moving away from any use of GM foods or even GM crops for animal feed.

An online poll [2] on the question: “"Should GMOs be banned in Europe?"” conducted in April 2009 returned a 79 percent yes, 18 percent no and 3 percent don't know. Days earlier, Germany outlawed the cultivation of Monsanto's GM maize MON810, a surprising move that delighted campaigners. Germany became the sixth EU country to introduce a provisional ban on the GM maize, after France, Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg and Greece [3]. A source close to the EC said the German ban might bring a revision of the European legislation on GM crops. Germany also voted with the majority in March when the European Commission (EC) attempted to force Austria and Hungary to reverse their bans, and its ruling was overturned by a big majority [1].  (1.Ho, MW. How do we protect ourselves from these GM foods ("frankenfoods") when the government won't let us know which ones are in our foods?  Most GM foods are confined to soybeans, corn, rapeseed(canola) oil, rice, cotton. Some 99% of the crop acreage devoted to GM crops in North America is for corn, soy, canola(rapeseed), and cotton. There are also a much lower amount of very few fruits(some Hawaiian Papayas, and a not yet released plum) and vegetables(some zucchini, crookneck squash), and some dairy products "goosed" with recombinant growth hormone (rBGH/rBST). Unfortunately many of these are used in various processed products with no mention of being GM. This among other reasons is why the DIET section recommended against eating  processed foods. You just don't know what you are being fed!

We don't have to wait till the GOVERNMENT gets it's act together. What tipped the balance in Europe was the public rejection of foods tainted with GM foods. The very same thing will work here, TIpping points do not require 100% of public adherence to be effective. As much as 10-30% of total rejection and refusal to buy will rapidly cause merchants to ban GM foods and additives from their stock of foods. People have this power quite independent of the government. When commercial interests have taken over the government, they can still be defeated by a rapidly rising rejection by people via their pocketbooks. We have that strength. Eating a diet of fresh vegetables and fruits with whole grains and avoiding prepared meals or servings as suggested in the DIET section largely avoids GM foods. This not by accident.

TIPPING POINTS OCCUR WHERE BEHAVIOR OF PEOPLE FORCE ALTERNATE END POINTS. THIS IS ONLY A MATTER OF AWARENESS AND THE COLLECTIVE INTEGRITY OF PEOPLE TO ACT AS THEY BELIEVE. THIS IS A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT POWER IN THE USA WHERE THE GOVERNMENT IS ACTING IN WAYS CONTRARY TO THE WISHES OF THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE. IT APPLIES TO EVERY AREA OF OUR CULTURAL-ECONOMIC LIFE. OUR CONNECTIVENESS THROUGH THE INTERNET GIVES US THE ABILITY TO FOSTER THESE TIPPING POINTS BY SHARED SOCIAL CHOICES. THIS SOCIAL PHENOMENA OF PROGRESSIVE CONVERSION TO ALTERNATE BEHAVOIRS WAS DESCRIBED IN JAPANESE MONKEYS AS THE 100th MONKEY EFFECT. This was observed when a solitary monkey was seen washing his food. Over time it became many more and then a tipping point occurs where most change over to the new behavior. TIPPING BEHAVIORS ARE SOCIAL CHOICE SYSTEMS THAT CAN FORCE THE HAND OF GOVERNMENTS.

WE DON'T HAVE TO SUPPORT BAD COERCIVE INDUSTRIES LIKE GM FOOD, (OR BEING TRAPPED IN A WARFARE STATE !) W.E SIMPLY DEMAND AND CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY. THE ECONOMIC SYSTEM ALWAYS SEEKS PROFIT BY CATERING TO WHAT PEOPLE WANT. WE ARE NOT POWERLESS, WE CAN CAUSE THIS TIPPING BEHAVIOR IN MULTIPLE AREAS OF LIFE. WHAT IS NEEDED HERE IS CONVERSION OF ANGER AT THE MISBEHAVIOR OF GOVERNMENT INTO CHOICES THAT MAKE IT UNWORKABLE FOR "THEM".
As covered in the DIET section, EAT BY CHOOSING HEALTHY FOODS AND HEALTHY SLOW DELIVERY OF NUTRIENTS IN YOUR DIET. YOU ARE NOT GIVING UP THINGS, YOU ARE SIMPLY REFUSING BAD THINGS THAT WILL INJURE YOUR HEALTH AND LONGEVITY.

 

Meat from "100% grass fed" animals will be free from GM food, but not "grass fed"; which can be 'finished' in feed lots on GM soybeans. ;One can generally avoid all GM foods by buying only "100% organic" but not just "organic" foods.

This numbering system is a industry wide system called the PLU code developed by the Produce Electronic Identification Board, an affiliate of the Produce Marketing Association. These codes are used by all major supermarkets.

Do remember that this code system does not currently apply to processed foods that routinely have GM food additives. It applies only to vegetables and fruits. AVOID PROCESSED FOODS WHERE GM FOOD IS SECRETELY INCLUDED AND NOT SO LABLED. THE SIMPLE UNPROCESSED FOODS ARE MUCH BETTER FOR YOU.
AS YOU HAVE SEEN IN THE RECIPES section, these can be made into delicious foods that supply health and very long periods of nutritional satisfaction while preserving your insulin sensitivity (& longevity ! )

 

 

 

NANOTECHNOLOGY - SMALL SIZE - BIG DANGER 

Nanotechnology is the ability to produce very small particles less than approximately 100 nanometers ( 100 nm =  0.00000004 inches   or  0.00001 cm - a few ten-thousandths the diameter of a human hair) . At that size, a whole new set of reactive and toxic properties become available that usually were not experienced with larger particle size. Except for elements of our biology, humans have never had to deal with pure substances of this size in our evolution. This is a little like our use of microwaves and low frequency EMFs < electromagnetic waves that disrupt our biology > that our grandfathers never encountered-covered earlier under the SUBSCRIBER PDF on EMF dangers in EXTERNALS).  

When we do encounter various normally non-toxic compounds like the long used white Titanium oxide UV "sun block" that is also commonly also used in cosmetics, things get very different at the nano level. Nanoparticle Titanium oxide is easily absorbed into the skin and is very neurotoxic (injurious to our nervous system). Most of this neurtoxicity  is due to normal phagocytic (engulfing & eating) cells that engulf bacteria or viruses and digest them to protect us. This type of cell uses ingestion followed by oxidative bursts of free radicals to destroy the offending invader. This is the standard way our immune system deals with objects of that size which could be viruses or small bacteria. Our engulfing cells cannot destroy the nano particles like they would a bacteria or virus or very small bacteria such as pleuropnemonia. In the brain a similar phagocytic engulfing occurs  by  a "microglia" cell that gobbles up any particle of potential danger to local neurons. To destroy the invader, these cells generate dangerous level of free radicals - which would kill a virus or a bacteria. This process results in damage to surrounding "free radical sensitive" neurons because free radicals leak out of the engulfing cell and damage local neurons. Not what you expect from a day at the beach or putting on a cosmetic. This is just one of many examples of how ordinary substances considered safe become surprisingly toxic at these small sizes. Our cells and our evolution have never had to contend with this problem of super small sized inert non-biological nanoparticles. Worse yet, some nanoparticles have novel reactivity that is not seen with larger sized chunks of the same material. Small size does count here.

Part of the problem is the absence of any coherent regulatory oversight, so cosmetics, food producers, and sporting goods manufacturers want to save money and improve physical properties by using nanoparticles to improve flavor or as a test for contamination or just provide higher physical strength for sporting goods. This is just another example of how profoundly lacking in knowledge we are about things that may harm us. I termed this "INNOVATIVE IGNORANCE " when we were dealing with foods, but the same idea applies to many other areas of life.

 

"There's a knowledge gap here that needs to be addressed," says Mark Welland, director of the Nanoscience Center at Cambridge University, who advises the Royal Society, Britain's equivalent of the U.S. National Academies. The Royal Society on Nov. 23 issued a report saying that research on health and safety aspects of nanotechnology was "urgently needed."   Nano, Nano, On The Wall... Nanoparticles have been found to mainly settle in the lungs and the nervous system (especially the brain)  where they cause chronic inflammation and lead to potential cell death. Chronic inflammation as you learned in the inflammation section of the IMMUNITY menu generates further diseases like cancer and generally degrades the functioning of your body. What makes nanoparticles so dangerous is that you don't get rid of them - they just keep irritating and inflaming tissues where they locate. Continuous irritation and inflammation can generate cancer and can lead to the death of nearby cells that can't stand high levels of inflammatory free radicals.

Nanotechnology is a fast moving technological field that needs some careful oversight and required safety testing because of the dangers. We don't have to stumble into one stupid mistake after another. This is just another example of this human capacity for "INNOVATIVE IGNORANCE". If our society fails to carefully evaluate these known dangers we will repeat the "FUTILE CYCLES" we encountered in GM Food and antibiotics.

Nanotech use of molecular carbon tubes and large cage like molecules called 'fullerenes' is becoming more widespread as structural support of sporting goods. Unfortunately, carbon nanotubes are associated with a type of asbestos like injury to the immune system function that increases the incidence of the connective tissue mesotheloma cancer .

Just behind that are the uses of nanoparticle Silver for antibiotic (and antiodor) properties. There is a long use of small charged particles called colloidal Silver to fight bacterial and even viral infections that began long before antibiotics were available. While few of these colloid particles are as small a  nanoparticles, there is some overlap. Colloidal silver has some saving graces and may not be as dangerous as carbon nanotubes and such. Only time will tell. Silver coins were often put in fresh milk to retard spoilage in colonial to much more recent times (pre-refrigeration) . Silver is often toxic to bacteria with minimal toxicity at low levels to humans.

The worst use of these nanoparticles is in food . This is especially so because nanotechnology used at a lower food chain level is "trapped" in the food and becomes our more concentrated fare when larger long lived organisms eat it. Then it is trapped in us. Think of yourself as a top predator in the food chain, after what you already know, would you want to eat the high mercury containing Sword fish daily? A study in the UK found at least 104 food and agricultural products available in Europe, including the UK, which use nanotech particles or technology. This includes some nutritional supplements under the Solgar brand, cling wrap and containers, antibacterial kitchenware, processed meats, chocolate drinks, baby food and chemicals used in agriculture. Our REGULATORY TAKEOVER & INNOVATIVE IGNORANCE is nowhere more apparent than here.

Any given plant or animal has been crafted by selection over many thousands or millions of years of evolution. Doing a few changes in our food or animals has no way to understand the colossal integrated whole that is always a series of alternative compromises to optimize the whole system. When we really know so little about this interactive complexity, our hubris may be the end of us. This in not a call to completely disengage, but to have much better testing methods and some idea about longer term outcomes before we inflict potential damage on people. You might even call it Regulatory Safety Testing, but it's just not part of our governments approach right now.

In short we need labeling laws that are enforced despite industry cries of harm. This is exactly the same as GM foods. All of these things point at a BIOLOGICAL INSANITY, that we see in GM food and almost every new technology that Lacks Long Term Health Studies. But that is not the worst of it. Government has been REGULATORY CAPTURED to deny you the right to know what you are being assaulted by. Both could have life damaging long term effects on ourselves and the ecology of the earth. What we have now is "REGULATORY CAPTURE " of our health protective agencies by profit driven corporations with almost no concern for health protection. This is largely a manifestation of the misfunction of allowing corporations to have such power over regulatory agencies that corporations decide what is safe, not the scientists of regulatory agencies. I remind you of the horrific birth defects induced in the drug 'thalidomide'. Mothers who engested this during pregnancy for its tranquilizer and painkiller drug effects had horribly deformed babies. There were far more of these in Canada and Europe because the US Food and Drug Administration refused to allow sale of this in the US. President John F Kennedy even gave an award to the pharmacologist and M.D. Frances Oldham Kelsey who was head of the FDA that stopped commercialization of this in the US. This was when science and scientists were running regulatory agencies instead of corporate connected politicos as has happened for many decades now.
